HIGHLIGHTS
Training
Two officers attended Oleoresin Capsicum (O/C or pepper spray) instructor training at Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
Mandatory department training was held at the parks office. Topics included trauma care, AEDs/medical equipment, evidence processing and packaging, policy manual update and O/C refresher. One officer received letters of commendation and medals for Valor, Life Saving and the Purple Heart award from the March 10th incident.
Public Relations
Our CPR instructor went and taught CPR and defib protocols to other city staff members.
Four officers taught the ALiCE model to all city staff employees. This was an introduction for city staff members to think about response options in an active shooter type event that they can use at work, home or out and about.
Police officers assisted with traffic and pedestrian crossing for the fireworks at Quail Ridge Park.
All officers worked the day of the Hairball event and picnic in the park on July 13th. We also were assisted by the Johnson County Reserve Deputies. This event ended up being a very large turnout and we did not have any major enforcement issues at the event.
On July 27th local churches hosted Community Meals at Hope Community Church. On duty officers stopped in for a meal and to meet with community members.
Equipment
Continued problems are appearing with vehicle/maintenance issues, and computer/storage related issues. Repair and replacement is being address and use of warranties that are still in place.
Equipment ordered and a new Dodge Charger was picked up. This vehicle is currently being outfitted and will soon be utilized in the fleet as a patrol vehicle. Hopefully this addition will help ease some of the wear and tear on the other patrol vehicles and reduce some miles on the older cars.
Enforcement
The department dealt with multiple animal type calls this month and the numbers show an increase compared to previous months. We have seen an increase in number of animals at large, found/lost pets, and an animal neglect/abuse call this month.
Officers conducted a search warrant on Sugar Creek Lane and arrested a felon in possession of a firearm and seized narcotics.
Three officers worked extra patrol from the Governor Traffic and Safety Bureau Grant (GTSB) and focused their attention on impaired driving and traffic enforcement. The grant will reimburse the department for the officer’s time during these lengthy investigations.
Two officers assisted Iowa City Police Department in a joint multi-agency project on Interstate 80 for drug trafficking. North Liberty Officers were able to locate and arrest a person for a weapon violation because he had a protective order in place and that voids a permit to carry.
Department Administration
The Department started the process for hiring our next officer that will occur in January. The advertisement was made public and we are accepting application and resumes until August 15th. The department will host a written and physical testing on September 7th.
Officers, police chaplain, and records staff made contact with Moulder and Associates to discuss concerns and expectations of the next chief. All staff members that could participate made an effort to be heard so they can be involved in the chief selection process.
The month of July had multiple officers and the records staff member gone for vacation. We also had two officers that were gone for their two weeks annual drill training in the month of July.
