City Hall Closed Wednesday, April 24, for Move

City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, so staff can move from the current, leased offices to the new, permanent building.

The final day of operations at 3 Quail Creek Center will be Tuesday, April 23.

City Hall will reopen at 360 N. Main St. at 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 25.

A ribbon cutting and open house is planned for Tuesday, May 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Training:

  • An officer attended dive training with the Johnson County Dive Team. (8 hours)
  • An officer attended training with the Metro Bomb Squad. (8 hours)
  • A Sergeant attended an Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Class in Marion presented by Public Agency Training Council. (24 hours)
  • A Sergeant attended premier training near Chicago presented by the Force Science Institute on use of force investigations and how to recognize and articulate important psychological, biological, and physiological factors that can influence human behavior and memory in force encounters and pursuit situations. (40 hours)
  • Two officers and records staff attended training on High Conflict Individuals and De-escalation Strategies in customer service (4 = 24 hours) in Cedar Rapids.
  • The Chief attended the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) state training conference in Des Moines (16 hours).
  • Two supervisors attended an FBI Commander training course in Cedar Rapids to discuss active shooter trends and responses by local police (24 hours).
  • An officer attended the a Symposium on Heroin and Opium Deaths at the University of Iowa put on by the US Attorney’s Office. (8 hours)
  • An officer attended a Field Training Officer development course in Urbandale. This officer will now be an FTO for the department and assist in training new hires.  (40 hours)
  • The ASP instructor was recertified in order keep his instructor certificate up to date (8 hours.)
  • All officers completed online legal training on Testifying in Court and the July 2015 Law update.
  • 6 officers and admin staff attended 2 hours of webinar training for the new scheduling software (18 hours).

Public Relations:

  • Officers attended a pep rally at North Bend Elementary in honor of Lincoln Ortman being named the Kid Captain for the Nov 7th Iowa-Indiana Football game.
  • Officers participated in a dodgeball tournament to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics of Iowa. 17 teams participated in the tournament and NLPD received the 2nd place trophy in their tier.
  • An Alcohol Compliance Class was taught at J & A Tap to 14 bar employees.
  • The department is currently accepting applications for the Citizen Police Academy. Applications can be found on city website and turned into the PD.  Officer Santiago and the Department will sponsor two High School Students to attend the academy.   Just submit applications with a note and must have their own transportation.
  • Two car safety seat checks were completed for residents of North Liberty.
  • Applications and donations were collected for the December Shop with a Cop program. Total collected amount is $340. The department will add other donated funds for this program.

Equipment:

  • We purchased and received the new 2016 Dodge Charger. This replaces the Charger that was totaled in the crash on the interstate. The vehicle is currently being outfitted by Keltek in Baxter, Iowa.
  • Purchased scheduling software for the department that will also track training, overtime, time off, patrol vehicle issues, and payroll. Members of the staff are currently learning the system and we plan on having all members using it by January.
  • Ordered and received 5 tasers that replaced older/expired models via a trade in deal offered by Taser. According to Taser, there is a 5 year warranty on the devices.

Enforcement:

  • The Drug Task Force Officer assisted the US Attorney’s Office with investigations and follow up from an NL case involving correctional officers and a former NL resident. Multiple parties were indicted.
  • Continued with extra patrol and traffic enforcement in the areas of schools and residential neighborhoods. A large number of complaints and extra patrol requests come from residents who contact the PD about speeders in these areas.
  • A snow emergency was declared for the first snow fall. 91 parking tickets were issued throughout the city.

Department Admin:

  • The hiring process started with the POST and physical agility exams on Nov 28th.
  • The department agreed to share the purchase cost of materials to build a new fence at one edge of our parking lot. This was a cost saving measure and will look at replacing the rest of the damaged fence around the building/parking lot.
  • The department implemented a risk assessment for domestic abuse cases that includes stalking and harassment. This also includes a follow up interview with any domestic abuse victims. The goal is to make sure victims know of the resources available in Johnson County and what services NLPD can offer.
