Training:

  • Officers completed one hour of online Police Legal Science (PLS) training on law update for use of force, qualified immunity, informant confessions, and 4th Amendment issues of property (18 X1 hour).
  • Two supervisors attended training in Davenport presented by Force Science Institute on use of force investigations, human factors, camera and recording technology, media relations and the law. (2 X 16 hours).
  • An officer attended bomb squad training in Johnson County (8 hours).
  • Chief attended the Blue Courage Executive Training Curriculum Course at ILEA. This is a new direction for the recruit officer training course. It focuses on the heart and mindset of officers. (4 hours)
  • Recruit Officer Sexton has completed 7 weeks of the ILEA Basic 14 week police academy. (280 hours completed). He is halfway through the program and is doing well.

Public Relations:

  • Officers were visible and helped with overall public safety concerns for Beat the Bitter event.
  • Officers Santiago was out recruiting in town and compared squads.20160220_134412_resized
  • Officer Tygart presented a class on the topic of empathy at NCJH for four classes.
  • The Citizen Policy Academy is continuing on Monday nights. Topics completed are Officer selection and hiring, JECC tour/Dispatch, Crime Scene Investigation, Traffic/OWI enforcement, Use of Force and Defensive Tactics, Jail Tour and Jail Alternatives, Taser and Interactive Judgment Simulator for Use of Force options. An NL Officer presented on the task force and drug trends in the area.
  • Travis Clubb completed 3 child safety seat inspections. These take approximately an hour to complete per seat/per vehicle. To schedule contact [email protected]
  • An officer gave a presentation to Johnson County Ambulance. The topics covered were meth labs and heroin use in the area.
  • An officer assisted with a presentation to teachers at Clear Creek Amana High School on drug awareness.

Equipment:

  • A ballistic vest was replaced after the 5 year manufacturer warranty expired this month. Because we have a mandatory wear policy for uniform officer, the department applies for a grant in order to be reimbursed the cost because we have a mandatory wear policy for uniform officers. The officer was able to be fitted and receive his vest in one day at Carpenter’s Uniforms in Des Moines
  • Radio reprogramming was completed for all patrol cars and portables radios.
  • A computer monitor kiosk was mounted on a wall that displays the officers’ schedules and any briefing announcements for their shift. This is a touchscreen system where officers can easily and quickly submit overtime or time off request.

Enforcement:

  • Several sexual assaults were reported and followed up on this month.
  • Officers are working traffic (overtime hours) for enforcement and education around the local schools during rush hours. This is funded through the GTSB grant.

Department Admin:

  • Spence Madole has completed all of his pre-employment conditions and will start March 1st.
  • NLPD was invited to fill 2/4 spots to travel to San Antonio, TX in May to go through a 40 hours Critical Incident Training (CIT) course that Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputies, Iowa City Police Officers and Coralville Police Officers have attended. The cost of the training is free, but we will pay for the officers’ time, travel, lodging and meals.
  • The Governor Traffic Safety Bureau Grant (GTSB) was applied for again. This grant helps us acquire new equipment, like a radar unit or a camera unit, as well as provide money for traffic enforcement. This grant is to promote safety and compliance with traffic laws. The grant amount requested is $12,115.50.
  • The wood privacy fence surrounding the patrol cars, on the East side of the lot, blew over during the high winds on Friday 2/19. It was budgeted to be replaced in FY 16-17.
  • An inventory for the State DCI crime lab was completed for our sexual assault kits. We have 7 kits that have not been tested out of 41 (as of Feb 1st). These kits have been collected since 1999. Sexual assault kits are not tested because the victim never made a report to the police department, the victim did not want the kit tested, or consent was not an issue, determined during the investigation.
  • Had a meeting with Workplace Learning Connections about accepting a high school senior for an unpaid internship for 60 hours. A student has been selected and accepted. She will start in March and complete the internship in May.
