City Hall Closed Wednesday, April 24, for Move

City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, so staff can move from the current, leased offices to the new, permanent building.

The final day of operations at 3 Quail Creek Center will be Tuesday, April 23.

City Hall will reopen at 360 N. Main St. at 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 25.

A ribbon cutting and open house is planned for Tuesday, May 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Training:

  • PLS online topics include search and seizure, Iowa’s Speedy Indictment rule, reasonable suspicion of criminal activity from current Iowa Case law. (19 hours)
  • Two Sergeants traveled to San Antonio, Texas to attend a 40 hour training course on Critical Incident training and response to mental health crisis. This is part of the Johnson County Initiative.
  • Department Meeting was held where officers reaffirmed their oath of office and the fundamentals of Blue Courage training program was presented.
  • Madole has completed 6 weeks at ILEA.
  • Two officers attended a 2 day advanced interview and interrogations class at JECC presented by CTK. (2 officers = 32 hours)
  • Driving instructor assisted instructing the new recruits at ILEA for a total of 12 hours.
  • 6 officers attended 2 hour training for the new online format for the Iowa DOT salvage vehicle inspections hosted by NLPD. The records staff also attended to get a better understanding of the procedures. The legislature raised the rate for the inspections to $50 and NLPD will be reimbursed for $40 for each inspections.  We average around 30 a month, but expect the online only payment will reduce the numbers.
  • Rescue diver attended training at Unity Point, St Luke’s, on drowning (4 hours).
  • Bomb Squad monthly training completed (12 hours)
  • Investigator attended training in Ankeny on Amber Alerts focusing on initial response, crime scene management, evidence collection and area canvasing by Fox Valley Technical College (28 hours).
  • Records staff attended a severe weather talk presented by KCRG.
  • The Iowa Chief’s Conference was held in Coralville. Chief attended the conference with training topics on Human Trafficking, FBI Evidence Response Team, Domestic Terrorism, Current Case study, De-Escalation, Police Mindset, Dignity and Respect, management rights, and discipline and termination.  Networking was also done across the state with other Chiefs and command staff. (20 hours)

Public Relations:

  • The Safe Kids Day was attended at the Coral Ridge Mall. All local agencies attended. NLPD had a vehicle on display and conducted child safety seat checks.
  • NLPD donated a “Ride Along” for a fundraising event for the North Liberty Community Pantry. The winning bid went for $150 in the silent auction.
  • Four 2nd grade classes visited the police department. One officer gave a safety talk while other officers were around to help answer questions.  The students then broke into groups to tour the patrol cars.
  • Two officers assisted serving a free lunch at Texas Roadhouse for a free will donation to Special Olympics. All area departments participated and raised $2,309.
  • Chief assisted with interviews for the University of Iowa search committee (area law enforcement group) for the VP and Director of Public Safety position.
  • Colony Pumpkin Patch Corn Maze was developed and released to the public. com came up with a K-9, Badge and officer design.   Officers are also helping with the planning of activities during the fall celebration.  We are honored to be part of this activity.
  • Empathy, bullying, sexting training was taught at North Bend Elementary. Officer Chuck also made and end of school safety video for the students.
  • Officers attended the graduation party of an 18 year old senior whose mother died two weeks prior. The officers responded to the original call and spoke with the young man. He was disappointed his mother would not see him graduate and did not think his extended family would be able to make it. The officers got a card and made an appearance at his party to support him on their own time.

Equipment:

  • Purchased a small pull behind trailer to store and transport firearms and defensive tactics equipment to our training. It will also provide some storage space for larger items in our basement.  It will be secured at the street department when not in use.

Enforcement:

  • Speed enforcement on residential streets in town. The use of the speed trailer and marked patrol cars in side streets and the construction areas have been in high demand.
  • Seen in increase in animal calls like found kittens, dog bites and animals at large.
  • Also because of the warmer weather, alcohol and narcotics charges have doubled from last month. This is from reported behavior or found during a traffic contact.
  • Increase in complaints about stored boats, trailers, and campers on the city streets.

Department Admin:

  • Completed new policies for sexual assault response and the use of the speed trailer.
  • Completed interviews and hiring requirements college Intern that will start next month.
  • Completed hiring requirements for the next officer new hire that will start in June.
  • Completed some building maintenance including -LED lighting upgrade, painting, and had a new fence installed that was blown down on the East side of the parking lot.
  • Assist/attend meetings for vehicle traffic and pedestrian safety because of reduced bussing.
  • Attend planning meetings for the I380 improvement plan and Forevergreen road project and impacts on NL.
