North Liberty Parks & Recreation Committee Meeting
Thursday, July 7, 2016
Board Members Present: Jef Farland, Jami Maxson, Scott Stahmer, Jeff Kellbach, Matthew Eckhardt, Bonnie Pitz
Others Present: Shelly Simpson, Guy Goldsmith, Brian Motley and Tim Hamer
Meeting called to order: 7:00 pm
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Approve minutes: Minutes from May 6 meeting approved (no quorum in June).
2. Board Appointments: Jef Farland reappointed; Matthew Echardt is our new member, he is a North Liberty resident and works
for city of Iowa City as Aquatic Supervisor. Jef Farland selected as Chair, Jeff Kellback as Vice Chair and Jami Maxson as
secretary.
3. Building and Grounds Report: Much time with mowing, especially with rain, also work on landscaping. New trees for Fox
Valley Pond, new concession stand up and running. Splash pad should be done by end of August. Rain postponed installing
Beaver Kreek Park playground to August 15.
4. Green Space Usage: Groups are using available green space without registering (non-ball fields). These groups are charging
for their programs, discussed whether to charge, how to police any policy. They do benefit from park space, utilize parking,
wear on turf, produce garbage, etc. Also concerns re injury and responsibility for safety. Board recommended Shelly and
Brian work on developing a policy to charge for usage, and gain input from city attorney.
5. Outdoor Pool – Opening weekend: Numbers presented in packet, comparing to past years.
6. Fiscal Year End report: Summary of FY ending June 30 presented. Biggest change is decreasing to one BASP in mid-year.
7. Upcoming Events: Canoe/Kayak Trip July 23
Youth Triathlon August 7
OLD BUSINESS:
Recreation Monthly Report: Increase in numbers for swim lessons with both am and pm classes.
Free Fishing Weekend had 300 participants. Summer Free Lunch program continuing to grow.
