  • NLPD hosted a 2 hour training event at the University of Iowa Credit Union called “Officer Involved”. It was a movie screening about the aftermath of an officer involved critical incident and the toll on the officer and their family.  Family members were invited to attend.  We had around 60 participants across Iowa and appreciate UICCU allowing us to use their facility.
  • On-line training from Police Legal Sciences (PLS) topics for the month included attorney/client in custody privilege, constructive possession of a weapons and narcotics, OWI and warrantless entry for welfare checks of an endangered individual current case law. (20 hours)
  • An officer attended a two day training on how to transport children with special needs. He is the certified Child Safety Seat Technician (16 hours).
  • ALERRT training for police officer response to an active shooter was held in a neighboring County. Three officers attended the free two day course. (48 hours)
  • One officer attended ALERRT Training level II for two days that focus on the trauma care during an active shooter event. The officer is also a medic in the military. He will take his knowledge from both areas and assist in future training for NLPD (16 hours).

Public Relations:

  • Officer presented at Safety Village safety programs and incentives for younger children.
  • Staff assisted at the Summer Lunch program a few days this month.
  • Chief attended the Kirkwood Community College Criminal Justice Advisory Board Meeting to discuss the curriculum and needs for students to get jobs in the field of their choice.
  • Officers attended the NLFD open house.
  • Officers attended the Reading Task Force at Penn Elementary.
  • Officer did a safety presentation at a local daycare.
  • Officers talked to children at Education Station about bike safety. They started off by showing what our department bikes look like, then checked helmets and assisted the kids in riding their bikes.

Equipment:

  • Purchased a department issued rifle for the new officer. He will take this to Cedar Rapids Academy and will have that training during the academy.
  • Purchased new summer polo shirts for the officers.
  • A patrol car was damaged when an officer drove through a street that was flooded. The officer did not see that the roadway was flooded because it was dark. The vehicle was repaired and covered by insurance.
  • Newest officer was outfitted with uniforms and all department issued equipment.

Enforcement:

  • Investigator and officers worked a murder for hire case and the defendant was apprehended after money exchanged hands. Several follow up investigations and meetings are ongoing.

Department Admin:

  • Eric Kapfer accepted the police officer position and will be starting the Cedar Rapids Regional academy in July. It is a 22 week academy and he will graduate November 5th.
  • The two active military personnel had their two week mandatory training this month.
  • Planning continued for the Blues and BBQ celebration.
  • Updated job descriptions for the LT position and SGT position.
  • The basement at the PD was flooded due to heavy rains. About 1- 1 ½ inches of water was removed.  The only thing damaged was some cardboard boxes that we were storing for purchased equipment.
  • Completed and requested all staff complete a survey about this department, supervision, training, and community interaction. Results will be compiled and we will incorporate into the interview process for the LT and SGT position and future planning.
  • The intern and the newest officer are compiling use of force records for the last two years to compile into an easier access format to gather data, trends, statistics, and areas we can focus additional training on.
