Pool Rules
The rules for the North Liberty Aquatic Center have been established for the safety of our guests and facility. By enforcing these rules we hope to provide the best swimming experience for everyone using the pool. Please respect both the rules and the staff.
Swim Lesson Make up / Refund Policy
- Request for program/class refunds must be made at least 3 weekdays prior to the first class meeting between the hours of 8AM-5PM.
- Refunds for health reasons may be considered. Copy of doctor’s note is required.
- Requests must be made in writing to the Aquatic Director.
- Credits may be applied to your NLRC account.
- Refunds are processed through City Hall and will be mailed to you. Please allow 3-4 weeks.
- No make ups/ refunds will be given if participant is unable to attend class/es
- Participants are not able to attend a different time/ session if they are unable to attend their specific class
- In the event of a pool closure:
- M/W classes will make-up a missed lesson the Friday following the missed class at the original scheduled time, no refunds will be given.
- Private lessons will be given a credit on their account
- Saturday lessons will be given a credit on their account
Supervision:
1. Children 8 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult 16 years or age or older.
2. For the supervision for groups of children the adult to child ratios must follow these guidelines:
a. Infants to Toddlers (0-3yrs) – 4 children – 1 adult. Within arms reach of the caregiver.
b. Preschoolers (4-5 yrs) – 5 children – 1 adult.
c. Grade School Ages (6 years and up) – 10 children – 1 adult
3. Children 9 years and older many use the facility without adult supervision.
4. Car seats and strollers are allowed on the pool deck as long as the caregiver remains attentive and is within arms reach at all times. Play Pins are NOT allowed on deck at any time
Pool Attire:
1. Regulation bathing suits are required in all parts of the pool. Street clothes, cut off jeans, or thong swimming suits are NOT allowed.
2. Swim suits, towels, t-shirts, and other personal items with logos/words representing nudity, profanity, or inappropriate designs/slogans are prohibited.
3. Swim suits with built in flotation for younger children are not allowed unless the floaties are sown into the swim suit.
4. A t-shirt may be worn for sun protection in areas less than five feet deep. No t-shirts are allowed in the deep end of the pools and no one wearing a t-shirt will be allowed down the waterslide.
5. Regular diapers are not allowed. Swim diapers are available in the concession stand.
6. Life jackets are not allowed in the pool unless they are coast guard approved.
Pool Admission:
1. All patrons entering the facility must pay the appropriate fee or present a valid pool pass and sign in at the cashier’s desk regardless of intent to swim.
2. Daily fees are valid for admission to either pool on a per visit basis. Limited pass outs will be allowed for short periods of time (to run to car).
3. Swimmers are not allowed in the water until a certified North Liberty Lifeguard is on duty.
4. No persons having any infections, communicable disease, or illness with diarrhea within the last two weeks may use the pool.
5. North Liberty has the right to refuse service to persons with these conditions or persons who might disrupt patrons and staff and their safety.
Closing Rules:
1. In the event of threatening weather the outdoor pool will close. The indoor pool will remain open and swimmers will be directed to the facility. NO refunds will be given for inclement weather or other pool closings.
2. In order to open the outdoor pool, it must be 68 degrees according to the local weather.com site within one hour of opening. If the temperature is not 68 degrees or other inclement weather exists (ex: heavy rain, high winds, hail) we reserve the right to close the facility.
3. If we do not have more than 10 people swimming in the outdoor pool for more than one hour we reserve the right to close the pool.
4. If lightening is spotted the outdoor pool will be close for 20mins, if lightening is spotted again the 20mins will start over. If the pool is closed for more than one hour due to lightening we reserve the right to close the outdoor pool.
Pool Deck Safety Rules:
1. Rough play; pushing other people; dunking; riding, sitting, throwing off or diving off shoulders or hands is not allowed. Fighting will result in immediate removal from the facility.
2. To avoid slips and falls, please walk on the deck and in the zero depth areas.
3. When entering the pool from the side, a feet first approach is required. Inward dives and gainers are not permitted (Inward dive is a back approach with a front flip, a gainer is a front approach with a back flip.
4. No glass (except prescription eye wear) is permitted on the pool deck.
Water Safety Rules:
1. To use the deep water areas or diving boards, a child must demonstrate the ability to swim two widths of the pool using the front crawl stroke in good form with face in the water and rotary breathing. Lifeguards reserve the right to test any person when deemed necessary for the personal safety of the swimmer. Not – children may be tested more than one time. If a child has passed the test on a previous visit or earlier in the day they may be asked to repeat the test any time during the day or next visit. ANY child under the age of 9 will be required to take a deep end test.
2. Hanging on safety topes, lane lines, diving boards, and playing on the ladders is not allowed.
3. No hanging on the basketball hoops. No jumping and shooting from the pool deck. All patrons must be in the water when playing basketball. Lifeguards and staff have the right to take the basketball away from patrons. Staff may also take the basketball away on busy days for safety reasons.
4. To prevent spinal injuries, dive only in areas where the water is at least five feet deep and slowed by lifeguards. Patrons may use the deep end to dive when there are less than 25 people at the pool and no one is using the dicing boards.
5. The plunge pool is for use by swimmers exiting slides only.
6. When asked to exit the pool, please do so quickly and calmly.
General Rules:
1. The following objects are prohibited from the facility: glass (expect prescription glasses), gum, play pens, hard balls such as racquetballs, tennis balls, footballs, water guns/squirt guns. Scuba tanks, weight belts, outside food or drink, coolers, or containers.
2. Water wings, large floating toys and large rafts are not allowed in either pool. Noodles and coast guard approved lifejackets are allowed. When in doubt ask staff.
3. Kickboards and pull buoys are available for patrons actively swimming laps. These items are not to be checked out for use of the general public during open swim.
4. The diving blocks are for competition only. They are not for use by the general public. Patrons may only use the diving blocks with Red Cross certified swim coach at a swim team practice. NO EXCEPTIONS
5. Please be respectful of other patrons. Do not use abusive, offensive, or profane language/gestures.
6. During times of designated lap swim, no other activity will take place in the lap lanes. To participate during lap swim you must be at least 15 yrs of age; swimming laps; water walking.
7. The City of North Liberty is not responsible for lost or stolen items. We suggest that valuable and personal items be locked in lockers or not brought to the facility at all. It is also advisable to remove jewelry before coming to the pool and/or before entering the pool. Locks are available for rent at the Recreation Center main deck.
8. Due to the nature of some attractions, lost articles may not be retrievable.
9. Please be clean and courteous in the locker rooms. Turn off showers and flush toilets after use. Please report any problems to a staff member.
10. Concession items must be consumed in the concession area or grass deck. Beverage bottles will be allowed on the deck as long as they remain capped. NO glass bottles will be allowed in the aquatic facility.
11. Swimmers will be paged for emergency phone calls only.
12. Smoking is not permitted in the facility.
13. Additional rules may be implemented as deemed necessary for proper operation of the facility and protection, health, and safety of all pool patrons. Reasons for more pool rules may be the result of busy days, specials camps, pool rentals, or problems with the pool.
Diving Board Rules:
1. To use the deep water areas or diving boards, a child must demonstrate the ability to swim two widths of the pool using the front crawl stroke in good form with face in the water and rotary breathing. Lifeguards reserve the right to test any person when deemed necessary for the personal safety of the swimmer. Children may be tested more than one time. If a child has passed the test on a previous visit or earlier in the day they may be asked to repeat the test any time during the day or next visit. Deep end test will be performed in the deep end of the indoor pool by down guards. Children will be given a deep test band and must have the band on if they wish to use the diving board. Replacement bands will be given at a cost of $2.
ANY child under the age of 9 will be required to take a deep end test.
2. Dive straight off the end of the board.
3. Cartwheels, gainers, and non-standard/inward dives are not permitted.
4. The lifeguards reserve the right to prohibit any individual from performing a dive they feel might endanger themselves or others.
5. Individuals may not catch children jumping from the board.
6. Flotation devices or goggles are not permitted when going off the diving board.
7. Swim directly to the appropriate ladder to exit the pool. DO NOT swim through the lap lanes
8. One person at a time on the boards. Those waiting to use the boards must have their feet on the deck until the previous diver exits the pool.
9. Restrict your approach to one bounce on the board.
10. The fulcrums are locked in place for the safety of the diver. Do not attempt to move the fulcrums.
11. Do NOT hang on the side of the boards.
12. Do NOT attempt to throw toys or other items to a patron going off the board.
Zero Depth Area Rules:
1. Chairs are NOT allowed in the water. All chairs must remain in the grass.
2. No running in the water.
3. Do NOT sit on the pool inlets in the shallow end of the pool.
Mini Slide Play Structure Rules:
1. Direct caregiver supervision required.
2. Enter the feature from the steps not up the slide.
3. No running on or around the water play structure.
4. No head first sliding down the slide.
5. No climbing and hanging on pipes, handrails, pull ropes, and gears.
6. One rider down the slide at a time. NO double riding is allowed (including parents with the toddlers).
7. Caregivers may catch a child at the bottom of the slide as long as they are not in the way of other users or asked to move aside by a lifeguard.
Waterslide Rules:
1. Follow Lifeguard instructions.
2. All users MUST be at least 48 inches tall.
3. Riders must lie on their backs at all times. Sitting up while riding the slide is not permitted.
4. Maximum rider weight is 300 pounds.
5. No combs or foreign objects are allowed in pockets. No jewelry can be worn that would scratch the slides. Swim attire with rivets, buckles, or exposed metal is not permitted on the slides. Only approved swim suits are allowed.
6. Riders must enter the slide in a sitting position and wait for instructions from the guard.
7. Riders must ride feet first while lying on their back with arms across their chest.
8. Only one rider at a time. Absolutely NO trains or chain of riders.
9. No tubes, mats, or lifejackets are permitted on the water slides.
10. Riders must be in good health. Individuals with medical conditions including but not limited to pregnancy, heart attack or back problems should not go down the slides.
11. Do not use the slides while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
12. No running, standing, kneeling, rotating, tumbling or stopping in the slide. Arms and hands must remain in the slide.
13. No diving from the slides.
14. Leave the plunge pool promptly after entering.
15. Non-swimmers are not allowed in the plunge pool.
16. WARNING: Water depth is 3 feet 6 inches

Failure to follow the above rules can result in serious injury.Those found disobeying the posted rules may be removed from the pools without refund.
