Snow Ordinance
It’s snow season, so here’s some information on North Liberty’s snow ordinance. Watch the video, sign up for press releases, you’ll be glad did.
When is it a Snow Emergency?
Snow emergencies automatically go into effect when snow accumulation reaches two inches. During snow emergencies parking is not allowed on any street. This is to ensure streets are clear for effective snow removal and other road maintenance. Street Superintendent Don Colony stated, “Having all vehicles off North Liberty streets during snow emergencies not only allows the crew the clearest, safest path for plowing, but also keeps automobiles from being covered with residual snow push-off. Plus, it allows adequate drainage when the snow melts.”
Any vehicles in violation of the ordinance may be ticketed and towed without notice. Each twelve hour period that a vehicle is parked or allowed to remain on any street in violation of this section constitutes a separate and distinct offense.
Snow emergencies may also be declared by the City Mayor or designee at the Mayor’s discretion.
How to Get Snow Emergency Updates
Though Snow Emergencies automatically go into effect when there is two or more inches of snow, there are several places to get more information. The City of North Liberty encourages residents to sign up for free press release email notification (http://northlibertyiowa.org/about-us/press-release-sign-up). Alerts will also be posted on this page, NLTV channel 5, Facebook and Twitter. Additionally, occasional text and email notices may be sent by CodeRED; for free sign up click here.
CodeRED Notification
North Liberty is a part of the Code RED system, which is a high speed communication telephone notification service for mass emergency notifications.
The CodeRED system gives county and city officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages to targeted areas or the entire county/city area at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour. This system may be used to send snow emergency notifications by email and text. Under special circumstances, phone calls will be made using CodeRED; however, alerts may not be made at the beginning of every snow emergency in order to avoid diminishing the significance of the system. Remember, snow emergencies AUTOMATICALLY go into effect when there are two or more inches of snow, regardless of an alert notification. Click here for free CodeRED sign up.
CodeRed may also be used for Amber Alerts, Bomb Threats, Tornado Warnings, and Emergency Road Closures or Construction.
