ELECTION RESULTSAccording to preliminary results from the Johnson County Auditor, Chris Hoffman, Coleen Chipman and Terry Donahue will assume the three contested seats on City Council. Hoffman, who garnered the most votes with 634, will fill an immediate vacancy, while Donahue and Chipman will be sworn in after January 1, 2008. Jack Zimmerman and incumbent candidate James Moody did not receive enough votes to be elected. Running unopposed, incumbent mayor Tom Salm received 95% of votes for his office. While turnout for this election was less than 16%, the results represent a change in the majority of City Councilors for the coming term.
The other item on the ballot, the question of whether or not North Liberty can assess a 7% tax on guests at hotels and motels in the City, passed with 85% of voters in favor and 15% opposed. Revenue collected from the hotel/motel tax will be used for community betterment projects.
