Training:

  • Two officers attended training in Grinnell to become ALiCE instructors for violent intruder public education. (32 hours)
  • Two officers attended training in Iowa City on Peer Support. This is a program to offer support, guidance, or advice for an officer in need with personal or professional issues.  It was presented by DMPD.  (24 hours)
  • A supervisor attended a week long training in Des Moines for Verbal Judo. This will be an instructor course that he will share with the rest of the department. (40 hours)

Public Relations:

  • The department participated in the National Night Out. Several officers made contact with community members in their neighborhoods and at the parks. The officers also ended up in a game of kickball with kids in Golfview Mobile Home Court.
  • Officers completed violent intruder training at the High School, Junior High and one of the Elementary Schools.
  • Officers attended an Ice Cream Social as a thank you for a presentation at a local daycare.
  • Officers attended the Liberty High Open House.
  • An officer attended the Baby Fair at the Library and the group completed 24 child safety seat inspections during the event.
  • Officers attended the block party on Savannah Drive. Officers made some purchases at the silent auction and donated the toys back to the neighborhood kids.
  • Officers were present for Servolution at Penn Meadows Park.
  • Officers made special appearances at Porch Fest and the NLFD open house. Officer DJ Juan provided music for the Fire Department.
  • An officer attended the Fun Fair at Forevergreen Nursey and provided patrol car tours.

Equipment:

  • The police canine vehicle was ordered and picked up. All of the equipment will be installed next month. The vehicle will be ready for the class that begins in October.

Enforcement:

  • Officers made a juvenile arrest for burglary because the juvenile was caught on a home security camera system.
  • Officers have found stolen bikes and have recovered some stolen bikes from juveniles. The stolen property that was identified was returned to the owner.
  • We continue to encourage individuals to secure their belongings and lock vehicles and residences.
  • The investigator has been busy following up with recovered counterfeiting bills, child pornography, and credit card thefts this month.

Department Admin:

  • We completed the annual reporting process and review of the Federal Asset Forfeiture program.
  • One officer will be deployed for a year with the military.
  • Completed a new performance appraisal for all employees. This will be used for the yearly review in December.
  • Selection Committee got together to review the submissions for the RFQ process.

Toured police facilities to include, Johnston PD, Marion, Rock Island, and Grinnell buildings. Each facility was completed by different firms that submitted RFQ’s.
