Model Sailboat Races Begin June 10 at Liberty Centre Pond

Liberty Centre pond will be the site for radio-controlled sailboat racing on alternating Sundays this summer, beginning June 10.  The public is invited to enjoy the action as the five-foot-tall CR-914 class model yachts compete in races through the Eastern Iowa Model Yacht Club.  All of the Sunday races begin at 1:30 and continue through mid-afternoon.  Here is the official schedule for Liberty Centre Pond:

  • June 10
  • June 24
  • July 8
  • July 22
  • August 5
  • August 19
  • September 2
  • September 16
  • September 30

Weather permitting, several boats should be on hand for the races, which will follow a course marked by colored buoys. The boats are sailed exactly like full-size boats, using hand-held radio transmitters to control steering and the position of the sails.

Mid-week races are also tentatively planned for Liberty Centre Pond on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., weather permitting.  The club seeks more members and will be happy to introduce prospects to the sport.  For more information, the North Liberty contact is Dick Hakes at [email protected], and you can find them on Facebook.
