Let Your Light Shine

The lighting of the Christmas tree is a tradition that has been around for hundreds of years. The tradition has its roots in 16th century Germany when people began lighting evergreen trees with candles to symbolize the bringing of the light of the sun as days grew shorter during the winter solstice. The evergreen, retaining its foliage throughout the coldest season, stood to represent the continuance of life in dark times.

What better time than now to share in this tradition with our neighbors when we could all benefit from a little light of hope and renewal? Join us by creating and sharing a clip of the lighting of your Christmas tree or holiday lights that can be submitted from Dec. 7 until Dec. 18 to Jason Egly in the Recreation Department at [email protected].

The submitted videos will be edited together and made available through the city’s social media on the evening of Dec. 21. Each participant will also be entered into a drawing where 10 individuals will be randomly selected to receive a family-friendly board game to enjoy throughout the winter months!
