Fire Department Hires Second Full-Time Position, Training Officer Capt. Tina Humston

The North Liberty Fire Department has hired Capt. Tina Humston to fill a new full-time training officer position in the department.

“Capt. Humston brings 20 years of experience and knowledge from all facets of the fire service. She has a solid grasp on communication, managing people and a strong desire to positively influence organizational culture,” said Fire Chief Brian Platz. “We’re excited for her to put her mark on the department, getting us to that next level of competency.”

In addition to emergency response, Capt. Humston will be responsible for coordinating all of the department’s training and will assist with minor code enforcement inspections. Her position is just the second full-time paid member of the North Liberty Fire Department.

“I can’t overstate the importance of this new position,” said Chief Platz. “We are very excited to get to this level of our staffing plan.”

Before joining the North Liberty Fire Department, Capt. Humston served in the Iowa City Fire Department, rising to captain in 2014 and overseeing training for her company. She is an emergency medical technician and also served 12 years as a technician on the Johnson County Hazardous Materials Response Team, and was named the state of Iowa’s Haz-Mat Technician of the Year in 2012.

Capt. Humston is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy, the nation’s pre-eminent federal fire training and education institution.
