Peaceful Resolution Ends Joint Response

On the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 25, North Liberty police officers were assisting another agency with an attempt to locate a potentially suicidal man who was reported to have weapons. While in pursuit, officers deployed devices to stop the car under pursuit, and the occupant fled on foot. Johnson County deputies reported hearing the subject fire shots. No injuries were reported.

The subject entered an unoccupied building around the 300 block of Cherry Street in North Liberty. Officers set up a perimeter and believed the subject was barricaded inside the building. Nearby businesses were evacuated, and the public was asked to avoid the area or, if in the area, please remain inside with locked doors.

The situation was peacefully resolved around 6:30 p.m., and the subject was taken into custody.

This was a joint response, and the North Liberty Police Department appreciates the assistance of the Iowa State Patrol, Coralville Police, Iowa City Police, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Special Response Team, Johnson County Bomb Squad, Johnson County Emergency Management, Johnson County Ambulance, Joint Emergency Operation Center, North Liberty Fire Department, North Liberty Recreation Department and the North Liberty Street Department. Moxie Solar assistance was valuable during this coordinated event.

UPDATE, Feb. 25, 6:29 p.m. : The situation has been peacefully resolved. If we have further information, it will come on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.
