Mayor: the Hurt, Grief and Loss is More than I Can Imagine

From Mayor Chris Hoffman in a letter sent May 27, 2022:

Dear Mayor McLaughlin, city councilors, and community members of Uvalde:

For a moment on Tuesday night, my colleagues and I sat in silence to reflect on the horror visited on your children and your community. The hurt, grief and loss following the slaying of 19 schoolchildren and two teachers at Robb Elementary School is more than I can imagine.

That this slaughter happened to the children, teachers and staff at Robb Elementary School, their families and their community fills me with sorrow. That it happened a decade earlier, and 1,700 miles away at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Conn., makes my heart ache. And that it could happen here, 1,000 miles away, at Christine Grant, Buford Garner, Penn, North Bend, James Van Allen or Heritage Christian fills me with dread.

At our City Council meeting on Tuesday night, May 24, we renewed our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledged to do all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep our children safe.

We stand with you in your grief, hold you in the light, and stand ready to commemorate the lives of 19 children and two adults with action to prevent another community from feeling the same depth of hurt.

Yours in sorrow,
Mayor Chris Hoffman
