Fire Department Responds to 390 Herky St.

The North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched at 11 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024, for a report of a building explosion with multiple injuries at 390 Herky St., a commercial building will multiple users.

As North Liberty fire arrived, firefighters found an activated sprinkler system, smoke and multiple overhead doors hanging off the building, as well as a patient with burns. Responders also found that the south wall was bowed out and the roof had lifted from the building, indicating obvious structural damage.

Responders entered the building to locate active fire; the activated sprinkler system likely subdued the fire.  The Fire Department ventilated the structure supported the sprinkler system while all utilities were immediately cut.

The burn victim was treated by the Johnson County Ambulance Service and transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  JCAS also treated one firefighter, who was transported to UIHC before being discharged.

Fire departments from Coralville and Solon assisted in suppression efforts and Johnson County Ambulance Service and UI Med 1 assisted with treatment at the scene.

Investigation into the cause is ongoing with the help of the state fire marshal.
