Liberty Centre Pond to Undergo Erosion Control Maintenance
On Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, City of North Liberty staff will begin to drain approximately two feet of water depth from Liberty Centre Pond, 820 W Cherry St., in preparation for erosion control work to be completed by a contractor in December.
Water has slowly eroded the gravel foundation under the perimeter of the boulder-lined pond since it opened 18 years ago and rock is sinking in several areas.
Temporarily decreasing the water depth will leave the pond’s north point dry through the winter. As a retention pond, it is expected that Liberty Centre Pond will refill quickly in the spring by collecting runoff from nearby businesses and residences.
Access points to the water and sections of the walking trail may be limited at times in December while work is being performed.
