Beat the Bitter with Fire & Ice on Jan. 25

Embrace winter like a Norseman by joining neighbors for some outdoor fun — including fire shows, a giant slide, ice sculptures, skating and curling, a bonfire and photo ops —  at  Fire & Ice presented by GreenState Credit Union. The free event runs from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, in North Liberty’s Penn Meadows Park (355 E. Penn St.), Fire & Ice is free and packed with winter-themed fun. Bundle up to beat the bitter with:

Marvel at performances and displays

  • Enjoy fire breathing, juggling and spinning performances every 20 minutes, sponsored by Parlor by Thompson & Company
  • Admire nine ice sculptures (illuminated beginning at 5 p.m.)
  • See GreenState Credit Union’s (grounded) hot air balloon — and blast the burners
  • Watch the 15-minute firework finale, launched from the northern fields at 8 p.m.

Engage in activities and snag giveaways

  • Slide down the giant Snowzilla hill, sponsored by University of Iowa Health Care
  • Warm up around the giant bonfire
  • Take your picture with our marquee letters
  • Skate on a (synthetic) ice rink, sponsored by Scheels
  • Try your hand at curling
  • Stuff a Squishie Pillow and snag a giveaway with South Slope Cooperative Communications
  • Make a hockey slap shot with Collins Community Credit Union
  • Complete a STEM activity with UI Health Care
  • Meet your favorite snow princesses from 3 to 5 p.m. in the GreenState Credit Union booth

Fuel up with free snacks and food for purchase

  • Roast marshmallows and make s’mores with Hills Bank (free)
  • Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate from Urban Acres Real Estate (free)
  • Hot food and drink Marco’s Grilled Cheese, O’s Grill and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee (for purchase)

Parking is available in Penn Meadows Park’s north and south lots and along nearby residential streets.
