Besides the activities listed above, the department was also involved in the following:
- Officers from the department attended multiple different training seminars this month. The training included instructor certification for Standardize Field Sobriety Test (SFST) instructor in Coralville, IA. This is to have an additional instructor in this field for the department. Four officers attend the two day ALiCE instructor’s course, which is an instructor development course to teach public training for violent encounter incidents. One of our officers attended his annual training update for CPR, EMT training and instructor certification. We had two officers attend a week long training session for Field Training Officers (FTO) certification in Ankeny. FTO’s will be utilized when new staff is added on. We have waited for over two years for this course to be offered in the State. Two of the newer officers attended a three day training session on Interviews and Interrogations taught by a private group who work for the Iowa DCI and US Attorney’s Office in Cedar Rapids. Some of this training did not cost the department a registration fee. Other training we paid for the registration but the class was local so we did not have to provide travel or lodging.
- The ALiCE training was presented at Heritage Christian School by ICPD and North Liberty assisted.
- The department provided two officers for instruction at the Citizens Police Academy. They meet Monday nights for 11 weeks and discuss various law enforcement topics.
- The police department held two departmental meeting s Feb 4th and Feb 24th this month. These meetings last from 1-2 hours and cover topics that affect the daily operations of the department, future planning and equipment updates.
- North Liberty will be on our own for firearms training this year and will no longer attend with the sheriff’s office. This change is because of the number of officers and the need to schedule an additional day of training. The department is purchasing equipment that will be required and planning the dates and times for the training. We have one officer who will be attending the firearms instructor school and trying to get a second officers enrolled as soon as possible. This class usually has a waiting list and is in high demand. The department also worked on the finalization of the range agreement with CRPD and funding was approved by the council for the project.
- Pastor Jeff De Boer from the Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church started his career this month as a volunteer Police Chaplain for the North Liberty Police Department. He has been riding along with officers and seeing where he can be of service for this agency. We are very lucky to have him volunteer his time and efforts.
- North Liberty Police completed extra enforcement for parking violations during the declared snow emergency. For the most part, vehicles were removed from the street so the street crews could plow and a small number of parking tickets were issued.
- The department received two thanks awards. One from the Girl Scout Troop 8613 before Valentine’s Day and the other was from Sunline Recyclers for the department’s service on providing vehicle inspections for them. The PD really appreciated the troop and the business taking the time to recognize us.
