Training-
Two officers attended training on the method and the hazards of meth labs. This class was for an initial officer response and coordination of the resources needed to handle the material.
Officers attend a department training session on meth lab hazards, time sheet review, and policy update.
Two officers received letters of commendation and medals for Valor, and the Purple Heart award from the March 10th incident.
The North Liberty Police department hosted a two day rifle armor course at the North Liberty Fire for 18 officers from around the State. We hosted this course because we were unable to locate this training in a reasonable location and minimal fee. If we are the host agency the registration fee is waived for two attendees and makes it very beneficial for the agency. The fire department allowed us to use their training room and it worked great for what was needed. We will look at hosting an advanced class later this fall.
All North Liberty officers attended our spring rifle training with our new firearms instructor.
Online and live webinars were viewed by multiple officers this month. Some of the webinars were free, others required a small fee. This type of training can be accomplished in about an hour and officers can pause the training in order to respond to calls if necessary. Four officers viewed a recorded webinar on best practices for evidence collection and procedures because they are the evidence technicians.
Officers attended two nationally known law enforcement speakers. The speakers make the circuit once a year and we try to send officers if they are close. Officers went to Grinnell, Iowa for a one day seminar by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman on Bullet Proof Mind. He speaks about the mental preparation for combat and discusses the psychology of conflict. Lt. Jim Glennon held a two day seminar in Cedar Rapids discussing communication skills and practical skills for officers to get results. Officers purchased books or audio conference from both of these presenters.
Two supervisors attended the law/legislative update for changes in Iowa Laws effective July 1st at the Coralville Marriott. This training is brought back to the department and officers are informed of the changes that may be relevant. This training is sponsored by the Office of the Iowa Prosecuting Attorneys, Iowa Department of Public Safety, and Iowa County Attorney’s Association. It is one more way for the department to stay current on changing laws.
The investigator attended a one day class for field searches on electronics. This class provided software that would be utilized for search of an electronic device for items that may be needed for evidence, images that are not legal to possess, or could be used to rule out any wrongdoing. This software will tell the investigator if he needs to look further at the device. If a device needs to be seized for further investigation, it will be sent in for a forensic exam. This can be used in consent cases or incidents where there is a search warrant.
Pubic Events
An officer worked Safety Village and helped area children through the safety training, navigating through potential hazards and how to practice safe responses in unsafe situations. This officer assisted the summer camp program for two weeks for half a day.
At the North Liberty Fun Days events, officers put a patrol car on display in the park for the Family Fun Appreciation night event for the carnival. We were on display with other local emergency responders and children were able to go through the patrol car and talk with the officer. Officers also worked the North Liberty Fun Days parade and activities in Penn Meadows Park.
NLPD hosted the first Coffee with a Cop program at Corridor Coffee. Midwest One Bank sponsored the event and provided coffee for the participants. This program provided a relaxed forum for officers to interact with residents and business professionals to answer questions on enforcement activity, problems areas, police response options, crime trends and future job opportunities with the department.
