OTHER DETAILS
Training
Four officers attended a three day violent encounters training in Fort Dodge. The training, meals and lodging were paid for by a federal grant. The officers who attended the training said it was the best training they have received and different than any other training because it included responses in open areas or fields.
All officers attended the spring handgun and shotgun qualification course. Our instructor ran the training, but we did have a firearms instructor assist from the Sheriff’s Office as a safety officer. We also included use of force, defensive tactics and taser instruction for all officers. The first training session was held at the Cedar Rapids range. The second class utilized the Williamsburg range at a last minute request because of flooding at the Cedar Rapids range.
Our certified Radar and Lidar instructor was recertified at ILEA for another two years.
Two Officers received their ILEA certification as Bike Officers. The officers were able to use bicycles that we currently own and are looking forward to getting on that soon at local events.
Interim Chief Venenga attended the three day LECC (Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee) Conference hosted in Coralville, Iowa. This conference is put on by the Iowa Police Chief’s Association and the US Attorney’s offices of the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. The conference is to promote professional standards, leadership, and networking among the top law enforcement executives. The speakers on various topics came from outside of Iowa. Multiple vendors specializing in law enforcement equipment were also at the conference to showcase the latest technology in policing.
Online and live webinars were viewed by multiple officers this month. Some of the webinars were free, others required a small fee. This type of training can be accomplished in about an hour and officers can pause the training in order to respond to calls if necessary. This is something new for our department and will look to see if we can incorporate one or two online seminars a month into our regular training schedule for supervisors and line officers.
Pubic Events
An officer attended a Career Day at North Bend Elementary.
An officer attended a public safety talk at Van Allen Elementary with 17 kids.
An officer attended a safety talk at Kinderworld with 30-40 children between 2-5 years of age.
An officer worked at Safety Village and helped area kindergarteners through the safety training, navigating through potential hazards and how to practice safe responses in unsafe situations.
Officers were at the Blues and Barbeque Fest on Saturday May 26th. When the event was postponed the officers volunteered to come back the following day to work the event. The weather did not cooperate Memorial Day weekend and the event was cut short on Sunday due to rain and high winds.
On June 10th, at 10am at Corridor Coffee we are hosting a program called Coffee with a Cop. Corridor Coffee has agreed to host the forum that will have North Liberty officers come in and answer questions from the public on enforcement activity, problems in their neighborhood, police response options and future job opportunities with the department. There is no agenda and we want to encourage citizens to come and have a cup of coffee with a cop.
Other news
North Liberty fire Department presented a wooden plaque to the police department which contained the Police Officer’s prayer during Police Officers Memorial Week. The plaque was greatly appreciated and hangs in the hall as a reminder to all officers of their courage, strength, dedication and compassion. This was a very thoughtful gift from the members of the North Liberty Fire Department.
All North Liberty officers that were on administrative leave or sick leave have returned to active duty during the Month of May.
