Training
Four officers attended free training on the IOWA Vine system which is a victim notification system. This system is an essential part of safety planning. IOWA Vine allows anyone to log in and sign up to receive updates if an offender is moved or released from custody via email, text message or a phone call.
Two officers attended the Standardized Field Sobriety Seated Testing at the JECC. This training was to offer additional testing for OWI or intoxication cases.
The department held in service training for the month and discussed case law, narcotics recognition, the police chaplain program and an administration update with all the officers.
Public Relations
We submitted our proposed patch designs to telecommunications. We asked for the public’s help on selecting our new shoulder patch. It was put on Facebook for votes and comments. We got a great response from the public. The winner is the one on the left with the blue edge.
An officer met with a Boy Scout troop to discuss on the job responsibilities and safety.
“No Shave November” was allowed for officers to have a ¼ inch goatee. Participants must pay $30 to have the goatee for 45 days. The money will be donated to the DVIP toy drive in December. The department collected $240 for this great event.
Guns and Hoses Charity Hockey event at the Coralville Mall was held on Nov 16th. An Officer donated his time to help the organization raise funds and hand out safety information to the families and kids. The officer also provided his DJ services for the event.
The department will be taking applications for the Citizen Police Academy to start on January 27th, 2014. We are encouraging North Liberty residents to be involved and represent this community. More information is on the website and at the PD for interested parties.
Equipment
A consistent, matching uniform was selected by the uniform committee and approved. The new uniforms will be displayed when the new patch arrives.
We received another $4000 Grant from Target Corporation to acquire a FLIR. This is heat and infrared technology that can be used to aid in looking for people or objects. The FLIR has been ordered and should arrive in a few weeks.
Enforcement
Multiple narcotics investigations have occurred this month in North Liberty. The Johnson County Drug Task Force has been very busy in town and several arrests have occurred.
The Drug Recognition Officer (DRE) that was trained last month was utilized five times in the month of November. North Liberty had two cases and he assisted three other agencies in their investigations to remove people who are impaired from the roadway.
Department Admin
Officer Bryan Davis started with the department on November 13th. Officer Davis has been a certified peace officer since 2006. Officer Davis has started the field training program and we are looking forward to having him as part of our team.
Casey Wood was hired and will attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in January. He currently has been assigned to administrative duties in the office.
Six officers submitted packets for consideration for the next Sergeant’s promotion. An interview committee has been selected and we will proceed in the first days December.
The department policy manual was updated and redistributed to all staff.
