Deep ice in ponds is hard on fish

Fish in North Liberty’s ponds have been affected by the long, cold winter, and it’s starting to show as the ponds thaw, revealing fish kills at several ponds.
Ice reached depths of 30 inches, so shallower ponds saw more casualties than normal. The heaviest fish kill was at Broadmoor Pond, but the ice also affected Fox Valley’s pond. Some clean up is underway, but cannot be completed until all the ice has thawed.
Restocking of grass carp, bluegill, bass and catfish is expected to take place in the spring with the help of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
