Training:
• North Liberty Officers attended three days of Force on Force Instructor Training in Cedar Rapids. These instructors are now certified to teach scenarios of when to use or not use force with simmunition rounds. Simunitions are soap filled or paint ball rounds that are fired out of guns that are similar to our duty weapons. Total for three officers-72 hours.
• Officers attended ARIDE (Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement) training at the JECC. This is a recognition program for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. 3 officers for two 8 hour days, total 48 hours.
• A firearms instructor went back to ILEA to assist teaching with the new recruits at ILEA for 8 hours.
• One officer is attending training for Clan Lab identification 40 hours.
• One officer attended the National School Resource Officer Conference in Des Moines for 40 hours.
• Two supervisors attended Incident Command ICS-400 class in Iowa City total 32 hours.
• The department held two hour training session on resources for Johnson County Veterans, Big Brothers& Big Sisters program, and the Below 100 Initiative for officer safety.
Public Relations:
• An officer assisted instruction at the Citizen Police Academy.
• An officer gave a safety presentation at Montessori school.
• Coordinating the National Prescription Drug Take Back on April 26th in partnership with Care Pro/Liberty Pharmacy. For anyone who has medication to destroy, NLPD will continue to house for the DEA disposal at the end of the month.
• Sergeant Chris Shine was selected by the NRA as 2013 Officer of the Year for his heroic and quick actions during a shooting on March 10, 2013. He will travel to their conference next month to receive the award.
Equipment:
• Body cameras were implemented for all uniform personnel and updated the recording policy for officers.
• The department is in the process of ordering leather duty belts for all officers. These will replace the nylon belts officers currently have. This expense will come out of the Salvage Vehicle Inspection Fund.
• Multiple vehicle maintenance repairs being completed. Safety of the vehicles is a priority, and if we can get buy until the two older cars are traded in July we are nursing them along.
Enforcement:
• Multiple criminal investigations occurred this month for financial crimes and sexual assaults.
• A clan lab located and cleaned up in Golfview Mobile Home Court at the end of the month.
Department Admin:
• We have been granted an EPA reimbursement for a meth lab cleanup at #9 Golfview from 2013. Total reimbursement $3756.94.
• We are completing the final draft for the changes for the department’s mission, vision and core values.
• Evidence procedures and organization are being audited and an electronic scanning system has been implemented by the evidence technicians. This will aid in matching evidence to our police reports without a duplicate form and for quicker notification for disposal, returning of property, or forfeiture following the court proceedings.
• A letter of commendation was given to Officer Joel Miller for going above and beyond on a medical call last month. This was recommended by his supervisor and approved by the Chief. This was excellent work by Officer Miller.
