Public Relations:

  • Officer Travis Clubb completed 3 child safety checks. Information was updated on the police website to contact Travis for safety seat check appointments.  Each inspection takes approximately an hour and he schedules his own appointments. To schedule contact [email protected].
  • October 17th was America Reads Day and an officer volunteered to read to elementary school children.
  • ALiCE was presented to North Bend Elementary staff for intruder response options.
  • Three officers attended the Team Avery Dodgeball tournament at North Bend Elementary for support and donations gathered for a 1 year old with cancer.

Equipment:

  • Annual Radio maintenance was completed for all portables and in-car radios by Racom.
  • Complete re-order of department ammo after fall firearms training.

Continued maintenance issues with older patrol cars and the purchase of snow tires to prepare for winter weather.

  • Purchase precautionary equipment to have available, in case of call to assist JC Ambulance and NL Fire with an Ebola patient.
  • Upgraded departmental patrol car cell phones under the provider maintenance contract.

Enforcement:

  • This month included an investigation on a fatality truck vs. motorcycle crash at Penn St. and Nathan Dr.
  • In reviewing the reports there seems to be an increase in traffic related offenses. Five people were arrested this month for driving while barred and revoked.
  • An on-going investigation is continuing into the recovery of several stolen firearms. Once all of the firearms are located, responsible parties will be charged. The Federal Government is assisting with the investigation.
  • The department continues to receive reports and videos of people not stopping at the stop arm for school bus violations. Officers follow up and issue traffic citations to the violators.
  • An officer worked overtime under the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) program in the evening and overnight hours targeting drunk drivers. Officers generally volunteer for this detail on weekends and holidays.

Department Admin:

  • Department was awarded a COPS hiring grant and approved by Council to start the process.
  • I attended the Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers board meeting. Their information will be included on future press releases when we are seeking help from the public to solve a crime or identify a person.
  • This month worked on the budget and potential expenditures for the future growth of the department.
  • NLPD challenge coins were received and look fantastic. Five coins were given to each member to award people who have specifically made a positive difference in their lives and support this department’s mission. Officers in the performance of their duties may also provide their coin to a community member, who in their mind, went above and beyond a citizen’s responsibility and performed a selfless act. The officers will type a memo to the chief and their individual coin will be replaced. The citizen’s actions will also be recognized in this monthly document.
  • Research was also completed into some other cities recommended local ordinances. These additions were discussed with staff and I expect will be presented next month before council to consider.
