Training:
- The department hosted area training in North Liberty. Presenters were brought in from ILEA and the Attorney General’s Office to provide OWI and law update. Everyone that could attend the training did. (13 Officers, 6 hours of training =84 hours)
- Records personnel went to the Joint Emergency Communication Center (JECC) to see and learn their operations. The records department has daily phone calls and interactions with JECC. We also use the same computer software. (6 hours)
- Officer Jennings attended the monthly dive training (8 hours).
- An Officer attended the Standardize Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) recertification class to maintain his instructor certificate. (8 hours)
Public Relations:
- Officer Travis Clubb completed one child safety check. Information was updated on the police website to contact Travis for safety seat check appointments. Each inspection takes approximately an hour and he schedules his own appointments. To schedule contact [email protected].
- Officers participated in the DVIP toy drive and made donations for the drive. Officers raised $340 and were allowed to have a goatee until the city’s holiday party. Officer Santiago used the money purchase gift cards for the older children. The toys were distributed to families in Linn and Johnson County.
- Officer Chuck Tygart participated in a demonstration with area K-9 Officers for 3rd graders at Penn Elementary.
- The department will be accepting applications for the Citizen Police academy until the middle of January. The numbers of applicants are limited and additional information is on the website. This is 11 weeks of training with area law enforcement.
- The Department is participating in the City-Wide Severson challenge donating items to the NL Food Pantry. Each shift has been challenged by their supervisor to donate.
- The Department received multiple thank you cards and treats from citizens for the Holiday season. These were very much appreciated by the department.
- Officers continued with business checks to gather after hour key holder information. This information is used in case of an emergency or an open door is discovered.
Equipment:
- Ordered lockers for the locker room.
- New duty belt equipment was ordered for the new officer.
Enforcement:
- This month there was significant amount of time involved in investigating domestic disturbances and an increase in missing juveniles or runaways.
- Officers also increased traffic contacts during the holidays for impaired drivers.
Department Admin:
- The department is continuing the hiring process for the next officer from the COPS grant. A top ten was compiled of the applicants who passed the physical, and post-test. Interviews are set to happen the first week in January in front of a hiring board. The list will be narrowed down, then background investigations will be performed and psychological tests will be administered. The next academy start date is April 26th if a non-certified officer is selected.
- The Police Department’s first Chaplain, Jeff De Boer, has resigned his volunteer position because he is moving to Indiana. Jeff will be greatly missed by the officers and we all wish him well in his future endeavors.
- Officer Cody Jacobsen turned in his two week notice. He has accepted a position with West Des Moines Police to be closer to his family. Cody has been a certified officer for 2 ½ years. He too will be missed and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
- The small locker room was moved to a larger office to accommodate more lockers and storage space for the officer’s gear.
- Officers put in for the yearly bid for shifts and rotations that take place January 1st.
- Supervisors started the year end process for performance evaluations, goal accomplishments, and officer productivity.
- Year-end totals are being compiled for all past available records into one document.
