Training
- Officer attended diving training with the Johnson County Dive Team. (8 hours)
- The “Heroes Path to Excellence” seminar in Cedar Rapids was attended by one officer. (8 hours)
- Taser training was held for 3 new officers (16 hours)
- The Law Enforcement Executive Conference was held in Coralville. Two Supervisors attended the 2.5 days of training (40 hours).
- The investigator attended “Investigative Strategies for Child Abductions” in Des Moines (40 hours).
- An officer attended the “Advanced Collision Investigation” course at ILEA (40 hours).
- An officer went to Defensive Tactics (DT) Instructor training at ILEA . This will give us a second instructor for DT. (40 hours).
- Two supervisors went to “Employee Management training at ILEA (16 hours)
- A supervisor went to the “Below 100” instructor course teaching officer safety and wellness initiatives. This is a train the trainer course, so we will have our own instructor. (8 hours)
- All officers received training online for the civil eviction process, court No-Contact Orders and mental illness committals. (6 hours)
- Officers attended an online course through the PACT for positive approaches to “Impacting your Community” (2 hours)
- An officer was certified as a bicycle patrol officer (40 hours) and attended training locally.
- Training was held for strategic planning and logic modeling at the Mid-West Counter Drug training at Camp Dodge. This information will be used for future planning of this department. (16 hours)
- New recruit officers are in their Field Training Program with their Field Training Officer for approximately three months.
Public Relations:
- Officers assisted with a Bike Rodeo at Van Allen elementary.
- The department hosted approximately 80 elementary kids on a walking tour of the public safety buildings and vehicles. Discussion topics were stranger danger, seat belt use, and calling 911 for emergencies.
- Requested assistance from five community partners to measure our progress with the implementation the community orientated policing standards within our organization, at the individual, supervisor and management level and our response to community problems. The results will be tabulated from the COPS office and will be distributed at a later date.
- Officer Clubb completed 4 child seat check-ups for the month.
- A supervisor is on the committee for Blues and BBQ and has been attending planning meetings.
- Officers represented North Liberty and to paid their respects to Officer Kerri Orozco at her funeral in Omaha, NE. She died in the line of duty.
- Officers attended the Career on Wheels event at North Bend Elementary. This was a public talk about personal safety, use of 911, and a tour of the police vehicles for around 120 elementary students.
Equipment:
- Purchased a hand held radar unit to replace a 10-year-old model.
- Replaced half of the tasers. The older models were 6-8 years old.
- Quotes were received for the new patrol cars and meetings with vendors/installers for all of the equipment. The lowest bid was selected and we will start the transfer process to the new vehicles in July.
- Several issues have been occurring with our body camera downloading process. Supervisors have been dealing with the vendor and distributor to try to remedy the problem and to replace blown out cables that are required for the downloading of the video onto our server.
Enforcement:
- Increase request for officer presence around the schools, Penn and 380, and the construction zones off of HWY 965 during rush hour times.
- Increase in animal calls this month from last month by 10. Mostly, pets at large and barking complaints.
- Unlocked motor vehicles have been entered with miscellaneous items missing. This is happening near the area of Copeland Drive and Circle Drive. We remind everyone to lock their vehicles and secure any valuable out of sight.
Department Admin:
- We hired an intern from the University of Dubuque who is from the area. This will be a paid position and he will work in the office and ride along with patrol officers for a total of 100 hours over the summer.
- We have started the process for hiring a new part-time administrative assistant.
- While attending the Chief’s conference in Coralville there was a local vendor that provides legal online training modules for Iowa officers. This program provides overviews, testing, and documents. This program also retains where each officer has completed their self-pace training. Since court decisions change frequently, we will be exploring the product, per officer cost, and other users for future planning.
- Started the process of a strategic planning document for the department. This includes the grant application process and the expectation of the department within the community.
