Training:

  • An officer attended training with Johnson County Mediations Services on being a mediator between parties. (2 days, 16 hours)
  • All officers attended annual 2 days of Multi-Agency Training Sessions (MATS) for Sexual Assault, mental health update, Critical Incident Training (CIT), Juvenile Court Services, scenario based training, law update, and radio operation (16 hours X17 officers)
  • The online Police Legal Training topic for the month was on Sexual Assault Crimes and investigations Part 2. Completed by all full time officers. (1 hour X 17 officers).
  • An officer attended bomb Squad training (8 hours) plus calls in for area presidential sweeps.
  • A supervisor completed an online, 6 weeks, liability course presented by the FBI. Topics included sexual harassment, deliberate indifference, internal affairs standards, supervisor/municipal liability and use of force standards.

Public Relations:

  • The department participated in the City Wide Severson Challenge to collect and donate food to the NL Food Pantry. Our participation increases every year.
  • ALiCE or active shooter training was presented at Heartland Trucking for all 190 employees in two sessions.
  • An officer presented an Empathy Class to four classes at North Central Junior High School.
  • The Chief presented to future chaplains for an hour over Skype. This was a class at the Mid America Reformed Seminary (Indiana) on the topic of our police chaplaincy program. This included benefits and barriers to overcome during implementing a program and for a successful program.
  • Emergency Response procedures were reviewed for Heritage Christian School with an officer.
  • The Citizen Police academy started their 12 week program. Eight of the 32 applicants are North Liberty residents.

Equipment:

  • We are still having an issue with our body camera mounts. We have sent two in this month for repair because the plastic is breaking away from the metal clip. It is just poor design for daily use. This clip is how the camera attaches to the officer’s uniform.  The vendor has been replacing the broken equipment.  We are exploring other options.
  • We also are experiencing an issue with our recordings that we make for court purposes. The vendor provided an update and now installs 7 different drivers for viewing of the video.  This update is too large for a DVD and we have to utilize three DVDs for one incident. We are working with the vendor to go back to before the update, or being able to select what driver we want to view the video on for copying purposes. This has just increased the cost of purchasing DVDs and storing 3 instead of 1 for an event.

Enforcement:

  • Officers spent a significant amount of time assisting parties for dissolution of a marriage and division of property. A court order 2 hours of an officer’s time allotted for removal of property from a residence.  Due to safety concerns, two officers were needed. The PD is also listed in the court order to be a drop off and pick up of minor children because of threats or hostility. Resulting in one party calling for an officer to stand by for each exchange.
  • The investigator has been busy with several reports of sexual assaults this month and a child endangerment charge. Charges have been filed in two of the cases and the remaining are still under investigation.
  • The annual tobacco compliance was conducted at the 10 businesses who sell tobacco. All businesses passed and did not sell to the minor.

Department Admin:

  • Bruce Sexton Jr accepted the police officer position and is currently at the ILEA police academy. He will graduate April 15th.  One position remains to be filled from a vacant position. (Total full time sworn position filled 18 out of 19 allotted).
  • The vacant position is in the process of being filled. Background and Psychological evaluations have been completed on the next candidate.  We are waiting on the results of the psychological evaluation. The physical will be completed the first week in February. The next academy starts April 18th.
  • Union mediations were held this month. The Union will hold a meeting to discuss the current city pay period and union monthly pay period.

  • Budget requests were held before council.
