This specifically deals with training officers in communication and the science of implicit and explicit bias. This is a train the trainer program and both supervisors are field trainers, as well as instructors in other areas (2 officers = 40 hours).

Public Relations:

  • An officer gave a presentation to park rangers about meth lab awareness including, disposal, and contents typically found in labs.
  • Three off duty officers volunteered to work at the NL Optimist Pancake Breakfast. This was a shift goal to assist with community outreach projects. This was scheduled and planned on their own time.
  • The police bikes were pulled out of storage and officers were able to get out to make contact with residents in neighborhoods. Officers also rode the walking routes from each neighborhood to the elementary schools in anticipation of the decreased bussing for next year.
  • Officer Travis Clubb completed his recertification to be a child safety seat technician and completed 10 safety checks for the month.
  • Officer conducted a presentation on empathy to classes at NCJH. The officer also read and wrote a poem inspired by Dr. Seuss. This was very creative and fun for the 3rd
  • Officers attended the Big Brothers program at NCJH. Four officers volunteered to be Big Brothers and mentor 7th  This program is expected to go into next year as well.   Officers, while working and not on calls, are allowed to attend the one hour sessions each week.

Equipment:

  • All rifles and handguns were inspected and armored for the year by our certified armorers.
  • Uniform, duty equipment and a handgun was purchased for the new officer.

Enforcement:

  • Officers spent time tracking a juvenile runaway which resulted in an Operation Quickfind. She was located and returned home safely. We had another runaway later in the month.  She was also located with family out of state.
  • NLPD partnered with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct a compliance check for all sex offenders listing a North Liberty address. All of the registrants in North Liberty were in compliance.

Department Admin:

  • Spence Madole started March 1st. He will go to the ILEA academy April 18th.  He is working in the office and helping with administrative tasks.  He will also be riding with officers.
  • Chief attended a meeting about NLPD’s commitment to sending an officer to San Antonio for CIT training and assisting in curriculum development. Upon completion, officers will be able to assist with training all Johnson County Officers.  This will branch out to all first responders receiving the training.  We are currently scheduled to send two sergeants in May.
  • Lighting is being changed in the PD. The lights that are on the majority of time are the first to be switched to LED. We will replace all interior lighting to LED bulbs over the next couple of months.
  • On Base Record Management System is being implemented. This will be a way to track all of our paper files and search capabilities within the system.  We are piggybacking on the system that Tracey has implemented for City files.
  • Phone system was changed, so after hour calls will be dispatched quicker. After one ring, when the font office is closed, calls will be transferred to JECC.  However, if a person knows the officer’s voicemail number, they can dial it at any time.  The change was due to voicemails left after hours or on weekends that should have had an immediate response.
  • We are trying to streamline the purchasing and contracts of the city’s AEDs between all departments. Each time a defibrillator was added, another contract was created for maintenance.
  • Two officers volunteered to represent NLPD by attending the funerals of the Des Moines Police Officers who were killed in the line of duty.
  • We continue to submit progress reports on the COPS grant award. This consists of what community policing initiatives we have been involved with and review of their publications.
  • 2015 Annual report was completed.
