Free Tax Prep Help Available for Qualifying Low- to Moderate-Income Filers

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, is again available for qualifying low- to moderate-income workers in Johnson County. VITA provides free tax preparation assistance from trained volunteers. VITA 2022 services are available through Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Eligible households must have a 2021 annual income below $57,000.

VITA tax clinics provide trained student volunteer tax preparers from the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business accounting majors and law students at the University of Iowa College of Law. All volunteers are certified by the IRS in preparing returns and have had at least one tax course as part of their coursework or law training.

Electronic filing is provided so that taxpayers can receive their tax refunds quickly. Taxpayers using VITA volunteers to help file their taxes do not pay to have their returns prepared and do not pay to get their refunds.

VITA volunteers are now taking reservations for low-contact and no-contact appointments. To request one of these methods or to get on the waiting list for a face-to-face appointment, use this link: bit.ly/UI_VITA_Enroll. More information is available at tippie.uiowa.edu/vita.

VITA is part of the Johnson County Earned Income Tax Outreach Campaign, a project devoted to supporting the financial security of working families in Johnson County by offering free tax preparation services.
