Illegally Used Fireworks Responsible for Fires in North Liberty

Fireworks are a traditional part of America’s Independence Day celebration, yet every year people take needless risks — possibly injuring themselves or others and damaging homes or other property — when they celebrate. The North Liberty Fire and Police departments have responded to two grass fires and an injury due to fireworks in the past week.

Any time illegal fireworks are discharged, they pose a potential risk of fire and a significant injury risk. Please remember that discharging any consumer fireworks is illegal in North Liberty to protect public safety. Even novelty fireworks and sparklers deemed legal can be harmful and often result in serious burns, hearing loss and other injuries. Fire concerns are compounded this year due to the abundance of dry conditions.

Those who use consumer fireworks in North Liberty will be subject to criminal prosecution or worse yet: a painful or debilitating injury. People discharging illegal fireworks can be cited and, if damage or injury occurs, those responsible be can be arrested and charged with arson, criminal mischief or assault depending on the circumstances.

In addition to fire and injury hazards, the loud noises and flashing lights scare pets, and the explosions can be harmful to citizens that suffer from post-traumatic stress. Please be a responsible, smart neighbor and leave the fireworks to the professionals. Just because you can buy them in North Liberty, doesn’t mean you can discharge them here.

Every year, North Liberty and other jurisdictions receive complaints from residents about their neighbors using fireworks. The most effective deterrent is residents talking to their neighbors who are using fireworks illegally. Additionally, reports can also be made to countywide dispatch at (319) 356-6800. Those who use fireworks without permits can face hundreds of dollars in fines.
