Illegally Used Fireworks Cause Fires, Injuries. Users Face Fines

Even before July, illegally used consumer fireworks have been responsible for several grass fires and injuries in North Liberty, and led to citations.

Using voluntarily provided doorbell video footage, the North Liberty Police Department identified a juvenile, who admitted to setting of the fireworks that set fire to the neighbor’s grass. The 17-year-old has been cited and faces a fine of up to $750.

Additionally, since the sale of fireworks to minors is illegal under state law, the North Liberty Police Department conducted compliance checks on consumer fireworks retailers in city limits. Both retailers failed and were cited; they each face a fine up to $805 and potential imprisonment if found guilty.

Fireworks, under state law, are legal to sell and possess. As a public safety consideration — every year, consumer fireworks cause injuries, damage and death — consumer fireworks are illegal to use in North Liberty and much of the surrounding area.

The North Liberty Fire Department urges residents to not use consumer fireworks. Fireworks, including sparklers which are legal to use in North Liberty, cause more than 19,500 fires each year and were responsible for 11 deaths and 10,200 emergency rooms visits in 2022, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Short of injuries and property damage, fireworks can be upsetting to children, pets and veterans.
