Youth Council Engages Community, Hosts Youth Activities

Formed in 2022, the North Liberty Youth Council is continuing its efforts to help make North Liberty a more welcoming, inclusive and fun place for people of all ages, especially young people.

The youth-led group is currently working on serval initiatives to engage high-school schools, including:

Youth Survey

We want to hear from you! The North Liberty Youth Council would like to gain more insight into what the youth of North Liberty are impacted by and care about. If you are a junior high or high school student, please fill out our youth survey. Youth who complete our survey will be eligible to win one of five $10 gift cards. Winners will be selected at random and notified on Friday, Jan. 19.

Banned Book Club

Teens are invited to pick a recently banned or challenged book and join the discussion at the North Liberty Library from 2 to 3 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month beginning Jan. 27.

Hygiene Products Drive

The council is collecting hygiene products to donate to the North Liberty Community Pantry, especially donations of personal care items including deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, pads and tampons and other common toiletries. Find an NLYC donation box and drop off items at the following locations in North Liberty during regular business hours between Jan. 8 and 17:

Youth Basketball Tournament

Junior high and high school students are invited to participate in a co-ed, 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Feb. 18 from 12 to 5 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center as part of Beat the Bitter 2024. Teams will be in two age divisions: 12 to 14 and 15 to 18. Registration is $5 per team and payment (cash only) is due at check-in on the day of the tournament. Prizes awarded to winning teams. The NLYC Youth Basketball Tournament is free to attend and tickets are not required.

High school students who live or attend school in North Liberty are invited to apply to join the council for the remainder of the year or to begin in the fall.
