55+ Connections: Week of 1/15/24

 The North Liberty Library will be CLOSED January 15th in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Rec Center will be open 6 AM – 9 PM.

Rent Reimbursement Program 

If you’re a low-income Iowan aged 65 or older or a low-income disabled adult you may be eligible for a partial reimbursement of your rent. You can now apply for reimbursement for 2023 and 2022 claims using any device that connects to the internet. To be eligible you need to be 65 or older in the claim year or be at least 18 and totally disabled in the claim year. You can access a printable form here. 

Income Limits 

  • To be eligible for Rent Reimbursement for claim year 2022, your total annual household income must be less than $25,328 
  • To be eligible for Rent Reimbursement for claim year 2023, your total annual household income must be less than $25,328

We’ll be having a PIZZA PARTY this week and after we enjoy our pizza we’ll play Bingo! Registration for lunch is just $5 and is required for all who attend. Participants must register before noon on Thursday, January 18th. Call the Rec Center to register (319)626-5716 or go online to your RecDesk Account and register yourself.

Iowa City Senior Center – Assembly Room or Room 302 

Come watch a free movie at the Iowa City Senior Center! 

January 19th movie: Selma (2014) – Selma chronicles the historic voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. David Oyelowo plays Dr. King in the biographical drama detailing the harrowing fight for equality that led to the signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Monday, January 22

North Liberty Rec Center – Classrooms 1 & 2 

CLUB 24 is a program for adults to socialize over University of Iowa Athletics.
Patrons can sign up online, over the phone (319-626-5716), or in person at the Community Center. Patrons must reserve their spot by the proceeding Friday (January 19th) each week. 

What we’re watching: a replay of the Iowa women’s basketball game.
Patrons will pay $6 cash day of the program unless they sign up online. Online registration you must pay at checkout. The cost will cover cinnamon rolls from Bluebird Café. Coffee will be provided for participants also. 

Jen Loeb: Shots from the Heart 

Saturday, January 27

Coralville Public Library – Schwab Auditorium 

An avid and accomplished climber, Iowa native Jen Loeb will discuss what it was like to summit Mt. Everest in a photographic and video presentation of her journey. Jen will also bring in some of her climbing gear, and leave plenty of time for questions. All are Welcome! 

Ice Fishing 

Saturday, January 27 

11 AM – 1 PM 

Liberty Centre Pond – 795 W Cherry St, North Liberty 

Try your luck catching some pan fish at Liberty Centre pond! 

This event is free, but a valid fishing license will be required for those 16 and older taking part. 

Ice fishing equipment will be provided as well as a free lunch (as supplies last). Remember to dress appropriately for cold, wet, muddy and dirty conditions. Layers are always a great option. Bring a hat, jacket, sunscreen and any other items you may need to be comfortable in the outdoors. Also remember to bring a camera and share the fun.

Fire breathing, juggling, ice sculptures, horse drawn carriage rides, prizes, bonfire with s’mores, food trucks, and more! Come join us for Beat the Bitter’s free family day in Penn Meadows Park, presented by Green State Credit Union! Parking is available in Penn Meadows Park’s north and south lots, at Penn Elementary and along nearby residential streets.
