Fire Department Rescues Driver in Goose Lake Pond

The Fire Department was dispatched at 8:08 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, for a report of a vehicle that was partially submerged in a pond.

North Liberty police officers arrived at the pond west of Goose Lake Circle to find a vehicle had gone through the ice and its driver was still inside. The first arriving firefighters donned ice rescue suits and made contact with the driver, whose condition didn’t favor the ability to self-extricate. Firefighters assisted the driver from the vehicle and then transported him to safety via inflatable boat. Once on shore, the patient transferred to a Johnson County Ambulance for treatment and transport. The patient was removed from the pond within 15 minutes after first responders arrived, and crews were on the scene for approximately 1.5 hours.

Additional agencies assisting at the scene included the Johnson County Emergency Management, the Johnson County Ambulance Service, the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center, and the University of Iowa Med 1 – Physician Response Unit.

The public is reminded that as temperatures fluctuate, ice can become weak and unstable. Please be cautious anytime you’re on or near frozen bodies of water, no matter the time of year.
