Spring Cleanup Day Won’t Be Held This Weekend, But Don’t Let That Stop You

UPDATE: The city will offer an alternative to cleanup day this fall. Get the details.

While Spring Cleanup Day, usually held the last Saturday each April, has been postponed to a to-be-determined fall date (and the North Liberty Garage Sales are up in the air), that doesn’t mean you can’t clean out your closet/basement/garage or whatever room now overrun with your child’s stay-at-home activities.

Give it Away Now

Be careful what advice you take from Anthony Kiedis, but here’s one that’s safe. Some non-profits are still accepting donations, some including larger items, and will arrange no-contact pick ups.

  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which will accept appliances, cabinetry, doors, fasteners, flooring and many other quality building and housing materials
  • Houses into Homes, which will accept beds, furniture and other household items

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle Now

If you have more than you can fit in your recycling bin, the following recycling centers are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City, has facilities for cardboard, paper, glass, plastics, metal, wine corks, vegetable and motor oil
  • 1201 North Dodge St., Iowa City, has facilities for cardboard, paper, glass, plastics, metal
  • 950 Hughes St., Coralville, has facilities for paper, cardboard, plastics and metal

Host a Dumpster Party

While the landfill is closed to individual urban residents, it is still open to commercial haulers. Consider renting a Dumpster (you can have it in your driveway for up to seven days), either on your own or with friends and neighbors (physically distanced, of course).
