Get Involved in Community Decision Making

Each year, the Mayor and City Council appoint commissioners to the city’s volunteer advisory boards and commissions. The commissions and boards help make decisions about a host of issue facing our community: what can be rezoned, if a variance to code should can be allowed, priorities for public parks and recreational amenities, and much more. Volunteers are needed to help lead and advise on those commissions. Applications are due May 22, 2025.

Applications are available online at northlibertyiowa.org or at City Hall, 360 N Main Street. Completed applications can be mailed to City Hall; c/o City Clerk; P.O. Box 77; North Liberty, IA 52317; in person at City Hall or by email at [email protected]. With appointments and reappointments, gender balance will be considered. Applicants must be 18 years old and a legal resident of the City.

After the May 22 deadline, applications will be considered by the Mayor and City Council. The Mayor will make recommendations for City Council approval at a City Council meeting scheduled for June. Appointments begin July 1.

Planning and Zoning Commission

A seven-member board charged with overseeing the city’s comprehensive plan, zoning code, reviewing conditional permits, and other planning and zoning issues. It usually meets the first Tuesday of each month. Two appointments will be made.

Board of Adjustment

A five-member board charged with hearing appeals regarding the application and interpretation of the North Liberty building code. It meets as needed. One appointment will be made.

Parks & Recreation Commission

A seven-member board charged with reviewing and recommending policies, ordinance and budgets related to the city’s parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities. It usually meets on the first Thursday of each month. Two appointments will be made.

Tree and Stormwater Advisory Board

An advisory board with five voting members charged with overseeing the city’s comprehensive City Tree Plan, the implementation of public education and programs for care and clean up of trees and waterways, and more. It meets quarterly. Two appointments will be made.

Library Board

A six-member board, with one member from unincorporated Johnson County, charged with overseeing the North Liberty Community Library. Is usually meets the third Monday of the month. Two appointments will be made.

Cemetery Board

A six-member board (three from North Liberty and three from Penn Township) charged with overseeing Ridgewood Cemetery on Scales Bend Road. It usually meets the first Monday of February, April and November. One appointment will be made.
