Prepare to Commemorate MLK Day with a Free Film Screening on Jan. 11

Iowa has celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday of each January since 1989. In advance of this year’s holiday, the City of North Liberty will host a free screening of the acclaimed 2018 documentary King in the Wilderness at the Ranshaw House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11.

About the film

Directed by filmmaker Peter Kunhardt, the film chronicles the final chapters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, revealing a conflicted leader who faced an onslaught of criticism from across the political spectrum.

Drawing on conversations with those who knew Dr. King well, the film reveals stirring new perspectives on Dr. King’s character, his radical doctrine of nonviolence and his internal philosophical struggles prior to his assassination.

From the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to his assassination in 1968, Dr. King remained unshakably committed to nonviolence in the face of an increasingly unstable country.
