Updates on Penn and Jones

Painters will be out on Penn Street tomorrow, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to stripe the roadway.  The contractors are shifting traffic slightly to the north for the next phase of construction.  Penn Street will be down to one lane during this transition.  Two lanes will remain open during peak times in the morning and afternoon.
Due to a drainage issue that was revealed during construction, the intersection of Jone Boulevard and Harvest Street will be down to one lane throughout this week.  The contractors are abandoning and replacing some older tile lines which requires some street work.  Weather dependent, this work should be completed in short order with minimal inconvenience to the neighborhood.
The Penn Street trail is closed, from the Pelling drive to Highway 965, effective immediately.  Construction traffic is expected to pick up in this area and they will be operating equipment very close to the trail.  For safety, this section of trail will be closed until further notice.  This closing includes the crossing at Jones Boulevard.  Trail users should cross elsewhere since this intersection is not biker- or walker-friendly at this point.
We have received some complaints at City Hall of pedestrians and bikers crossing through the construction work areas as well as through private property.  Just a general reminder to those using sidewalks and trails close to the construction areas: be cautious and courteous.  Please look for alternate routes as we do not want folks to get hurt by entering a construction zone.  Additionally, it isn’t fair to the adjacent property owners for people to be cutting through their yards.  Your cooperation on this issue is much appreciated.
Take care.
