Safely dispose of compact florescent lights

cfl
Compact florescent lights, or CFLs, are safer because the produce less heat, which also reduces energy associated with cooling homes and businesses.
However, despite their popularity, CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and so can’t be disposed of with normal household trash.
The City of North Liberty has adopted two bins so residents can properly dispose of CFLs properly. The bins are located at City Hall, 3 Quail Creek Circle, and the Community Center, 520 W. Cherry Street. To drop off burnt-out CFLs, simply put them in a plastic baggie and place them one of the bins during business hours.
CFLs and other hazardous household waste can be taken to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, 3900 Hevl Avenue in Iowa City, by appointment. For more information call (319) 356-5185 or read more online.
