Summer Lunch and Fun kicks off summer on June 8, 2015

Last summer, North Liberty’s Summer Lunch and Fun program served 2,500 meals to kids, building community while also helping fill the gap many families face when school lunch goes on summer break.
The program starts again on June 8, with the Unity Coalition is seeking to provide a summer program for youth — regardless of need — that includes a free, nutritious lunch with an entertaining (and often educational) activity.  The program will run for most of summer break: weekdays from June 8 to August 14 (there will be no program on Friday, July 3, due to Independence Day) at the Ranshaw House, just north of the Community Center, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., with an activity until 1 p.m.
There is no income requirements or registration; kids can just show up and enjoy.
On opening day, June 8, the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County is the community partner and a summer youth event/activity fair will be hosted during the program.  If you would like to include your organization, please email [email protected] to reserve your spot.
The organizing committee needs both financial and volunteer support for this program. Tax-deductible cash donations can be made to the North Liberty Community Betterment Group, a 501(c)(3) organization. Any amount will help fill kids’ tummies all summer long. Other donations of food and supplies are welcome, too. The program is seeking donations of coolers, water jugs, and picnic tables.
This year, the program is working to be waste-free by using compostable plates and utensils.
Volunteers will be needed daily during the course of the program to put the lunches together and serve them.  The summer lunch coordinator, Kim Ruth, will make sure that the lunch menu, food, food prep, food service, clean up and activity leading are full of volunteers. Come help one day or every week this summer. Kim can be reached at [email protected] or (319) 626-5712.
