Weekender: June 5, 6, 7

Friday night, LIFEchurch, 625 Meade Drive, hosts a free showing of Penguins of Madagascar starting at 7 p.m. They’re offering free food to go along with the movie critics called “verbally dexterous”. (I’m not joking; I pulled that from Rotten Tomatoes.)
Statewide, Iowa residents can fish without a license Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Every year, our parks and recreation departments partner with Scheels, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Take a Kid Outdoors for a celebration at Liberty Centre, on Cherry Street west of Highway 965. From 10 a.m to noon, they’re food, prizes and demonstrations. Learn to bait a hook (or learn how to get someone else to bait your hook), cast and more.
If you’re into the more competitive side of fishing, come out at 8:30 a.m. for the Fish Iowa! Games state finals where kids ages 5 through 17 flip, pitch and overhand cast for glory. (You can enter onsite into the open competition for $5.)
As always, on Sunday the weekly farmers’ market runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at Penn Landing. Penn Landing Market features two dozen purveyors of local produce, farm-fresh and handmade goods, ready-to-eat food and more.
