Special election to be held on April 25, 2017

On Tuesday, April 25, North Liberty voters will elect a mayor and a city councilor. All six North Liberty precincts will vote at the North Liberty Community Center, 520 W. Cherry Street, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

A special election for the mayor’s seat is required since a petition was filed on March 1. Because Terry Donahue had previously been appointed as mayor and resigned as a city councilor as part of that process, there is also an open city council seat. After discussion during the March 14 City Council meeting and a special meeting on March 16, the City Council determined that both the mayor and city councilor seats will be on the April 25 ballot. The elected mayor will serve until Dec. 31, 2017, with the seat again on the ballot in the November 2017 election. The elected city councilor will have their seat until Dec. 31, 2019.

Those interested in either seat are asked to file a nomination petition with the County Auditor no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 31.  As part of the petition, nominees must secure at least 25 valid signatures. Any questions should be directed to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office at 319-356-6004.
