Rent and Utility Assistance is Available for North Liberty Residents

Update: The Iowa Finance Authority has announced the application for the Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance Program will open on March 29, 2021, at 2 p.m.

North Liberty households impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for help paying utility bills or rent (including mobile home lots) through the Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance Program. This program can help with bills from as early as March 13, 2020, and is expected to begin taking applications in March 2021. North Liberty is temporarily exempting qualifying households from late fees and disconnection of municipal services when they self-certify their eligibility and plans to apply.

The state’s program is for renter households with income of no more than 80% of Area Median Income based on family size (see table below); has one or more individuals in the household who has qualified for unemployment benefits OR has experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs or experienced other financial hardship due directly or indirectly to the coronavirus outbreak; and can demonstrate a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability which may include a past due utility or rent notice or eviction notice. An eligibility precheck is available online.

Households who plan to apply can complete North Liberty’s self-certification and the city will temporarily exempt the account from late fees and disconnects. Regardless of your eligibility for the Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance Program, there are other places for help. If you need more time to pay your city utility bill, please contact City Hall [email protected] or (319) 626-5700 so we can help you make arrangements and find additional assistance.

If you need assistance with completing this form or the Iowa Rent and Utility Assistance Program application, please contact the North Liberty Library at (319) 626-5701. Library staff can provide computer access and other assistance.

If you or a neighbor need translation assistance, the city’s language ambassadors are here to help. Find them at northlibertyiowa.org/language-ambassadors.
