Red Fern Dog Park to Temporarily, Partially Close

April 17, 2024 UPDATE

Great news! The grass is growing, but the cool weather has slowed its progress. To aid this new root structure, we are keeping dogs off the grass a couple weeks longer, and expect to have the yard open by mid-May. Current passholders with questions should reach out to Special Projects Coordinator Angie McConville at [email protected] or leave a voicemail at (319) 626-5722. Please note that North Liberty City Hall will be moving to 360 N Main St on April 24, 2024.

—————————————–

Red Fern Dog Park’s south All Dog Yard will be closed through mid-May 2024, to reinvigorate the turf grass. During this closure, the Small Dog Yard and north All Dog Yard will remain open to Red Fern passholders.

Continual, heavy use of the park makes regrowing grass a challenge. Each year, the North Liberty Parks Department does fall and spring seeding and aerating, and this week added compost to the annual maintenance. The coming March weather is prime for this new seed to take hold; especially with the upcoming precipitation and warming of the soil. The yard could reopen sooner if this new approach does not result in successful groundcover.

While this sudden closure is an inconvenience for some people and pups, other area dog parks are open and available during this partial closure:

  • The City of Tiffin’s Dog Park is located within Jim Bartels Tiffin City Park, 809 E. Marengo Road. Passes are $5.00 per year and can be purchased from Tiffin City Hall.
  • The City of Iowa City’s Thornberry Off-Leash Dog Park is located at 1867 Foster Road. Day passes are available for $5.00 per dog. If a staff person is not present at Thornberry to process the day pass, payment envelopes can be found in the dispensers at the dog park entrances.

City staff appreciate passholders’ patience and understanding as we navigate the unique maintenance needs of Dog Park turf. Special Projects Coordinator Angie McConville is available to answer questions or hear concerns at [email protected] or (319) 626-5722.
